Disqualification and Reinstatement

Students who have been academically disqualified, away from SJSU for 2 or more semesters, or are enrolled or planning to enroll into Open University classes can attend a drop-in appointment for assistance.

Drop-in advising sessions are for quick 10-15 minute questions. Students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Topics may include:

  • Open University Courses
  • Reinstatement and/or Readmisson to SJSU
  • SJSU Policies and Procedure

If we determine your situation requires more in-depth support, an advisor will reach out to you to schedule a 30-minute appointment.

What is Academic Disqualification?

Undergraduate students on academic notice are subject to Academic Disqualification if their SJSU GPA for the Fall or Spring semester is below 2.0.

First-year students who have not raised their SJSU GPA to 2.0 or higher will remain on academic notice and will not be disqualified until they have either completed 30 units at SJSU or finished three semesters, whichever happens first.

Reinstatement 

Reinstatement is the process for requesting the removal of academic disqualification status. Approval of reinstatement allows a student to enroll in classes again but does not guarantee readmission to SJSU.

  • The reinstatement process is managed by the Registrar’s Office and requires a formal Reinstatement Petition.
  • Students should review the eligibility categories, required documentation, and signature process listed on the Registrar’s website.
  • You may request reinstatement even if you do not plan to return to SJSU, for example, to transfer to another institution.

Readmission

Reinstatement is a different process from readmission. Readmission is the process of being formally accepted back into SJSU as a matriculated student.
